We start in January,
Brush back the fallen leaves,
Though its cold you often see,
Some little shoots of daffodils,
We don’t get many passers by,
But on their way to school,
Parents stop to say hello,
It helps to pass the afternoons
Sometimes I might mention
How it feels like Spring is near,
And he would say right back to me,
Don’t wish the season gone too fast,
Cause you never know which ones yours last,
And though you might not like the weather,
it won’t stay like this forever,
So just button up your coat,
Put the kettle on let’s raise to toast
To how we’ll make it through the winter.
Its cold in February ,
At least the month is short,
So we just inspect the borders,
Check the frost bite hasn’t caught.
The gardens centres pretty close,
We go there once or twice,
And somehow spend a fortune buying,
Things to make the garden nice,
And more and more I’ll mention,
How it feels like Spring is near,
But he replies right back to me.
Don’t wish the season gone too fast,
Cause you never know which ones yours last,
And though you might not like the weather,
It won’t stay like this forever,
So just button up your coat,
Put the kettle on let’s raise to toast
To how we’ll make it through the winter.
And now that March is here,
How did it come so fast?
I really ought to get the seed down,
If the lawn is gonna last,
I didn’t think I’d bother much,
Now that it’s only me,
But find I do it anyway,
I have to keep that memory,
And when the daffodils come out,
And tell me spring is here
Still I hear him call to me,
Don’t wish the season gone too fast,
Cause you never know which ones yours last,
And though you might not like the weather,
It won’t stay like this forever,
So just button up your coat,
Put the kettle on let’s raise to toast
To how we’ll make it through the winter.

Just getting back into folk music. In my folking days it was Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Dick Gaughan, the Dansfields etc., and I was afraid there wouldn't be anything as good around today. I was wrong. This is beautiful and stands with the best. Del Buck
